Mondo Monday!

This is the last of these I do that’s not an official blog carnival. I know the blogs of lots of people now, and it’s exhausting. And try as I might, I can’t include everybody (there’s so many people blogging on AbsoluteWrite and other places!).

So I might start hosting blog carnivals. Those are fun, and themed, and much easier to gather links from.

Anyways, the last of the crazy random linkages–selections from Thursday to Monday of my favorite entries.

To My Pals: Friday Linkage Will Move to Mondays

You all also write interesting stuff on the weekends, and since that’s easier for so many to fit into their schedules, I decided to save the massive linkage for Mondays (also good because my traffic goes up over the week days).

Which is why Funky Friday did not appear, and will be replaced with Mondo Monday.

I’m gonna have to update my blogroll now that I know more folks who post lots of stuff. W00t.

You’re Not Fooling Anyone When You Take Your Laptop to a Coffee Shop: Scalzi on Writing

I’m warning you: this review is so totally non-objective. But as a look into the effects of pouring a strong solution of John Scalzi into my insane little brain, probably priceless.

I’m going to talk about how the book affected me. Just as John Scalzi comments that he’s writing from his own perspective of what worked for him, I’m giving you a mileage-may-vary review. Attempting to frame the text in some theoretical valuation of “goodness” is really not my strength.

WGA Strike: WGA and Letterman reach independent agreement

Over at United Hollywood: WRITERS GUILD REACHES AGREEMENT WITH WORLDWIDE PANTS:

The Writers Guild has reached a binding independent agreement today with Worldwide Pants that will allow Late Night with David Letterman and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson to return to the air with their full writing staffs. This is a comprehensive agreement that addresses the issues important to writers, particularly New Media. Worldwide Pants has accepted the very same proposals that the Guild was prepared to present to the media conglomerates when they walked out of negotiations on December 7.

This is serious, serious breaking news.

(Arcady and Zene will be up later tonight.)

My Favorite Quote of the Year: Larry Young

From a Whitechapel discussion of Brian Wood’s interview at ComicsReporter.com:

John Smith Dec 5th 2007

@ Larry– So really, Brian’s a good example of a right way to do it, isn’t he? Have a day job, work on the comics you believe in. Be talented. Put out good material, make some chump change. Get noticed, do your own thing in tandem with the machine, make actual dollars.

Larry Young Dec 6th 2007

Well, sure. Isn’t that how most “successful” folks do it, in any discipline or field of endeavor? Work really hard at honing your craft, develop a small but loyal following, reach tipping point, be “discovered,” enjoy ten-year path of becoming an overnight sensation, die rich.

That’s the basic career path of Isaac Newton, Picasso, Sandy Koufax, Ernest Hemingway, Kate Beckinsale, Sumner Redstone, and everyone else. Only the details are different.
