New on Kindle: Major Catchup Part 1

The Mystery of Grace by Charles de Lint

Buy: Kindle Store

Charles de Lint is in my “’nuff said” category. A supernatural love story that crosses the realm of the living and the dead, and oh heck, it’s Charles de Lint.1

A few more of his works have been making it into the Kindle store.

The Best of Gene Wolfe by Gene Wolfe

Buy: Kindle Store

31 stories from one of the masters of SF/F! Gene Wolfe is also in my “’nuff said” bin. Problem though: the table of contents is not marked as such, so it doesn’t show up in the Kindle menu; and also no chapter navigation. Sigh.

The stories include: “The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories”2 , “The Toy Theater”, “The Fifth Head of Cerberus”3, “Beech Hill”, “The Recording”, “Hour of Trust”, “The Death of Dr. Island”, “La Befana”, “Forlesen”, “Westwind”, “The Hero as Werwolf”, “The Marvelous Brass Chessplaying Automaton”, “Straw”, “The Eyeflash Miracles”, “Seven American Nights”, “The Detective of Dreams”, “Kevin Malone”, “The God and His Man”, “On the Train”, “From the Desk of Gilmer C. Merton”, “Death of the Island Doctor”4, “Redbeard”, “The Boy Who Hooked the Sun”, “Parkroads—a Review”, “Game in the Pope’s Head”, “And When They Appear”, “Bed and Breakfast”, “Petting Zoo”, “The Tree is My Hat”, “Has Anybody Seen Junie Moon?”, “A Cabin on the Coast”.

Blood Groove by Alex Bledsoe

He has adventures.

The Immortality Factor by Ben Bova

Buy: Kindle Store

Publisher’s Weekly says: “Bova’s cautionary medical thriller, the uncut version of his 1996 novel Brothers, explores the political, social and religious ramifications of what could be humankind’s greatest medical breakthrough—organ regeneration.”

A Forthcoming Wizard by Jody Lynn Nye

Buy: Kindle Store

Salt and Silver by Anna Katherine

Buy: Kindle Store

“Mortal peril is a total turn-on.”

I declare Buffyversification here.

Eve of Darkness by S.J. Day

Buy: Kindle Store

Forced into a demon-killing job by the bureaucracy of Heaven, Evangeline must survive in her new world. And her lovers are Cain and Abel, because obviously there is not enough drama in her life already.

The first book in the new urban fantasy Marked series.

Hylozoic by Rudy Rucker

Buy: Kindle Store

The sequel to Postsingular (not yet available for the Kindle), it’s Rudy Rucker so it’s goofy SF with a whirlwind of ideas, which is a nice change of pace from the usual Wasteland of the Future scenario. Even Publisher’s Weekly calls it “giddy”, but in a good way.

Haze by L. E. Modesitt Jr.

Buy: Kindle Store

The blurb on the back says: “What lies beneath the millions of orbiting nanotech satellites that shroud the world called Haze? Major Keir Roget’s mission is to make planetfall in secret, find out, and report back to his superiors in the Federation, the Chinese-dominated government that rules Earth and the colonized planets.”

Julian Comstock: A Story of 22nd-Century America by Robert Charles Wilson

Buy: Kindle Store

Cory Doctorow (!) wrote an Amazon review and, among other things, says, “The early jacket copy for Julian Comstock reads, in part, ‘If Jules Verne had read Karl Marx, then sat down to write The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, he still wouldn’t have matched the invention and exuberance of Robert Charles Wilson’s Julian Comstock.’ Damn right.”

Phantasm by Phaedra Weldon

Another volume in the awesome Dresden Files series, all of which are available in the Kindle store.

Magic In the Blood by Devon Monk

Ghost of the Well of Souls by Jack L. Chalker

Buy: Kindle Store

The most recent book in the science fiction series centered around the Well World. Its previous successor, The Sea is Full of Stars, is also available on the Kindle. The older books, however, are not.

Web Warriors: Memories End by James Luceno

Buy: Kindle Store

The first book in the Web Warriors series, a reprint from the early aughts. Think Netrunner.

Red Planet by Robert Heinlein

Buy: Kindle Store

One of the classic Heinlein juveniles, gradually trekking their way into the Kindle store.

  1. And it probably doesn’t involve grisly death images that stick in your mind forever, which I think is more of an early de Lint mark. []
  2. Yes, that is actually a single story. Well. Kinda. It’s Wolfe, you know what weird answers you’re going to get to such simple questions. []
  3. Non-expanded version of the novella, I assume. []
  4. Hmmm. []

Review at Tor.com: Federations

Federations

To boldly go where none have gone before.

To explore new worlds and encounter new civilizations.

To war, love, hate, seek justice and make peace in the depths of space and on the fringes of time.

Also, there is a hamster.

These are the stories of Federations, edited by John Joseph Adams and written by 23 writers.

New on Kindle: Catching Up March/April, Part 1: Tor/Forge

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these (because it’s an exhausting effort), but I really do need to keep an eye out for new books, and I’ve had a pleasant break.

The backlog is long, so I’m breaking these up roughly by publishing house and imprint.

So what has Tor/Forge (imprints of Macmillan) been up to?

Enclave by Kit Reed

Buy: Kindle Store

In a post-apocalyptic world, an ex-marine establishes an autocratic fortress/school for troubled young rich folks. Things go horribly wrong, and teenage geeks save the world.

Steal Across the Sky by Nancy Kress

Imager: The First Book of the Imager Portfolio by L. E. Modesitt Jr.

Buy: Kindle Store

Modesitt launches another fantasy trilogy.

An apprentice artist learns he’s an Imager—what he wishes comes true. This is almost never good (and it really isn’t) and causes much trouble for him (as par for such courses).

Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne by David Gaider

Buy: Kindle Store

Based on the hit video game of the same name, and a prequel to Dragon Age: Origins (not yet on the Kindle).

A deposed prince Maric must take back his father’s lands. Fortunately he has an army. Unfortunately, he can safely trust about a total of two people in the world: an outlaw and a warrior maiden.

The Unincorporated Man by Dani Kollin and Eytan Kollin

Buy: Kindle Store

An idea SF tale: a tycoon wakes up in the 24th century, where society has become a sort of Ayn-Randian utopia1, controlled by corporations and the free market, where people own stock in each other in lieu of actual relationships.

  1. Well. Depending on who you talk to. []

New on Kindle: Black Friday!

And now for a long reel of new science fiction and fantasy (and related) on the Kindle, because it just isn’t the day after Thanksgiving without consumer consumption.

Also, I’ve started covering offerings from Webscriptions, which includes books from Baen, Nightshade Books, and Subterranean Press.

Paul of Dune by Brian Herbert And Kevin J. Anderson

Buy: Kindle Store

Don’t you want another volume in the Dune series? Of course you do. The story covers the MuadDib jihad between Frank Herbert’s Dune and Dune Messiah (e.g., Paul Takes Over the World).

Also by Tobias S. Buckell: Crystal Rain and Sly Mongoose.

Princeps’ Fury by Jim Butcher

The third book in the Dragonmaster trilogy, the second being Knighthood of the Dragon.

Seraphs by Faith Hunter

Buy: Kindle Store

Second in the Rogue Mage series, now completing the Kindle set of Bloodring (book 1) and Host (book 3).

Elric: The Sleeping Sorceress by Michael Moorcock

Buy: Kindle Store

It’s Elric. It’s Michael Moorcock. It’s a new edition of a classic tale of the Eternal Champion. With extras.

Other Elric books available on the Kindle:

The Engine’s Child by Holly Phillips

Buy: Kindle Store

According to Meredith Schwartz in Library Journal: “Her lush prose and dark fantasy cityscape will appeal to fans of China Mieville’s Perdido Street Station and Sarah Monette’s Melusine, but her manipulative, scarred, sexual, unapologetic antiheroine recalls Elizabeth Bear or Melissa Scott.”

Phillips has also been compared to Jeff VanderMeer. All this tends to spell WIN for me. How about you?

On the Prowl: Tales of an Urban Werewolf by Karen Macinerney

Buy: Kindle Store

It’s a werewolf romance—and the protagonist here is the werewolf. Her perfect life begins to fall apart when she suspects her boyfriend of philandering1, a Texas millionaire client begins to exude a strange hold over her, and the Houston wolf pack shows up on her doorstep demanding union dues.

The entire series has been released on Kindle, with six books per mini-series. The first mini-series begins with Into the Wild; the second, The New Prophecy, begins with Midnight; the third, Power of Three, started with Sight.

A brand new series in the same vein, but this time covering three bears, has started with Seekers.

The Bride and the Beast by Teresa Medeiros

Buy: Kindle Store

A humorous, light romantic fantasy that recasts the tale of Beauty and the Beast with an imperfect heroine (irreverent and overweight) and a dragon (wounded and gentlemanly).

She has another book below….

A Kiss to Remember by Teresa Medeiros

Buy: Kindle Store

A humorous, light romantic comedy that recasts the tale of Sleeping Beauty in a more complex mold, with a man as the sleeping beauty (but not how you think), a woman who wishes vengeance upon him, and a woman who loves him. And the last two are the same woman.

I think this technically isn’t fantasy, because there appears to be no magic or fantastic beasts involved. But I included it anyways, because it seems fun and it’s a reprint of an otherwise unavailable book.

Strength and Honor by R.M. Meluch

Buy: Kindle Store

Military science fiction, and the sequel to The Sagittarius Command.

Star Trek: Destiny: Lost Souls by David Mack

Through a fair amount of Googling, I’ve determined that Lexi is YA fantasy-but-it-might-not-be-fantasy-kind-of-fantasy. A girl wakes up in the woods, remembering nothing before that, with a silver key. She finds shelter, and rediscovers a life she never knew bit by bit.

Fish Out of Water by Maryjanice Davidson

Buy: Kindle Store

Third in a series featuring a cranky mermaid named Fred, a hidden civilization of mer-people, a mer-prince, and her marine biologist friend Thomas.

The second book, Swimming Without a Net, is also available for the Kindle.

The third book in the The Second Sons Trilogy. The first two books, The Lion of Senet and Eye of the Labyrinth, are both available in the Kindle store.

Faerie Tale by Raymond Feist

A malevolent spirit in the forest brings supernatural mayhem and horror to the home of a family on the edge of its woods.

Feist is more famous for his fantasy, in particular the Riftwar Cycle. The earliest available in the series on the Kindle is the first half of a duology, Prince of the Blood.

Every trilogy after this duology is complete on the Kindle, however, starting with The Serpentwar Saga:

Your Hate Mail Will Be Graded by John Scalzi

The best columns of John Scalzi’s Whatever blog from the last ten years, starting with a wonderful and short treatise on hate mail. Hilarious and sharp, there’s a reason Whatever pulls hundreds of thousands of hits every week.

His famous earlier book, collecting the writing-orientated posts of Whatever, is also available via Webscriptions: You’re Not Fooling Anyone When You Take Your Laptop to a Coffee Shop. I actually reviewed it back in 2007, and favorably so.

Scalzi is also famous for the Old Man’s War series.

  1. Note to philandering boyfriends: your significant other being a werewolf tends to give such games away. []

Watching the Skies: Update October 2008

A few months ago Tor.com opened a limited time offer of free eBooks, including the Kindle-edible format of Mobipocket, and I noted that I would be watching the skies for new books in the Kindle store by those authors. In particular, the second, third, etc. books of the various series whose first hit book was part of the original offer (now expired).

Well, now is the update, which is a bit late in coming. These are books in addition to what was mentioned in the previous watching the skies series.

Tobias S. Buckell

He brought you Crystal Rain, and now the third book of this loose series is available. Sly Mongoose and Crystal Rain, as well as the second book Ragamuffin, are set in the same world, but are otherwise stand-alone novels.

Sly Mongoose by Tobias S. Buckell

Buy: 16.01

Peter David

As previously mentioned, along with other books, also a zillion Star Trek books. Here’s a collection of the highest-rated ones, including the classic Imzadi.

And yes, there is a slight Star Trek nerd hidden inside me, though I’ve been out of touch since season 2 of Deep Space Nine, except for a random look at Voyager and then Enterprise, at which point I lost all hope.

Anyways!…

Imzadi by Peter David

Buy: 3.60

The Next Generation classic.

The Captain’s Daughter by Peter David

Buy: 4.79

Robert Charles Wilson

He brought you Spin (and others). Added to the list is now:

The Chronoliths by Robert Charles Wilson

Buy: 9.99

I’ll try to keep a sharper eye out for updates when possible. There’s no way to sort by “just added” in the Kindle Store, only by publication date, and even so sometimes that’s very, very off.

Possibly messing around with AWS will have better results.

Watching the Skies: Tor eBook watch for 7/31, part 3

Part 1 and Part 2; and now the last bit, Part 3. These folks are especially prolific and should provide weeks, if not months, of reading time.

Kage Baker (In the Garden of Iden)
Jeffrey Carver (Battlestar Galactica)
L.E. Modesitt, Jr. (Flash)
Peter David (Darkness of the Light)

Fun Facts About Tor’s Free eBooks Authors, Part 3

Photography: John Pastor

This is the last entry in this short series about the authors featured at Tor’s Freebies Bonanza.

Here’s part 1 and part 2.

Onwards…

In the Garden of Iden – Science Fiction – Book 1 of a Series
by Kage Baker

A long series with an incredible amount of books about time-traveling cyborgs who work for a villain—and he’s already won the battle of good and evil (I mean, he can send cyborgs traveling through time). A free audio book of a novella set in this world is available from Subterranean Press.

In the Midnight Hour – Fantasy – Book 1 of a Series
by Patti O’Shea

Sometimes the desire of getting published pushes would-be-pro-writers over the edge. Patti tells you why you shouldn’t.

Battlestar Galactica – Science Fiction – TV Series Novelization
by Jeffrey A. Carver

It’s hard to do a great novelization, but he manages it. His site is full of fun things like Jeaves’ (an AI featured in his other books) treatise on Faith and Writing, links to his short stories online, and some unusually sage writing advice.

Flash – Science Fiction – Stand-alone
by L.E. Modesitt, Jr.

He thinks an awful lot about society, government, economics, etc. One of the few writers who discuss these aspects in detail on their blogs (actually, one of the few bloggers to do it intelligently as well).

Soul – Science Fiction – Stand-alone
by Tobsha Learner

She’s got a video about her work, bibliography, and inspiration. She starts talking about Soul at the 2:10 mark.

Darkness of the Light – Fantasy – Stand-alone
by Peter David

He’s done lots and lots and lots of stuff, from TV episodes to adaptations to novels to comics. He’s also been blogging since ‘02. Interesting entreis of late include how he proposed to his wife at the Adventurer’s Club and the twenty best ass-kickings in movies.

Three Shadows – Fantasy – Stand-alone Graphic Novel
by Cyril Pedrosa

He has a guest blog entry over at FirstSecond Books named There’s No Such Thing as a Graphic Novel, where he talks about comic books and the language of sequential art.

And that’s the last of the lot. Whew. It’s a lot of work stalking researching authors and suchlike, but also very informative. I’ve found quite a few treasured links I’ll be visiting back (right now the StarRigger site sticks in my head) and probably downloading to my Kindle.

… yikes, I need to put that 8GB flash card into my little Kindle soon…
